Of Mothers, Dolls and Barbie’s …

“La femme mystère”

A client once described herself as her mother’s Barbie doll. “Some days, Mom liked Barbie. Other days she hated me.”

I always took special care of my Barbie dolls, all the dolls I received for Christmas and other occasions. I also knew of girls who, after one day of receiving a doll, had stripped the doll of all her clothes, undone the doll’s hair and then had thrown the doll to the bottom of their toy box.

I often wondered what kind of mothers they would be, if they would have children. I hid my dolls, would not let girls like this near my dolls.

My client’s statement hearkened back to memories of these girls who did not care for their dolls, reminded me of the incredible care I gave my dolls.

On hearing my client refer to herself as a Barbie, who lived and died at the whim of my client’s mother, I thought of my mother, how I yearned for a stability of love, unconditional love.

I would like to ask my mother was My client’s description of herself and her relationship with her mother The image of the Barbie doll encapsulated, and aptly so, my client and the relationship that bound her and her mother. It as well described relations between me, and my mother.

More importantly, this image of the Barbie doll, also, revealed that the care and protection I showed the dolls given me demonstrated how the harsh relationship and interactions with my mother led me down a different path regarding nurturing.

While the care and protection I have and do show our children resembles that which I demonstrated towards my dolls, I do not see our three daughters as Barbie dolls or any other type of toy as such.

They are human beings whom we, my husband and I invited into our lives, and for whose love I have and do work each day. And unlike the dolls to which I gave enormous care, the exquisite beings that are our daughters, can and do speak to and demonstrate love towards me and my husband.
