Assisting our daughters in tuning into our inner wisdom requires that we, their mothers endeavor to do the same. This is not always, if ever, easy. American culture turns on notions that are based upon conventional wisdom.
The word, itself reveals a misnomer or oxymoron. Nothing conventional exists in wisdom. By its very definition the word, convention(al) defies the essence of true wisdom which is rooted in an inner knowing.
Truths may be accepted by experts and the public, but that does not make them honest or right. Most things done in accordance with what is generally done or believe run counter to what we know is best for both the individual and the community at large–at least in this culture.
Conventional wisdom in America says that success at your profession always includes a large paycheck. People who do not earn or receive enormous sums of money for the work they do are not considered successful.
We may not consider them unsuccessful either. But society certainly does not celebrate individuals who love what they do and who also do not get paid large sums of money.
Many beliefs like this, unspoken, but held strongly by the general public and oftentimes the experts, influence and effect not only our daughters, but us, their mothers.
If our daughters are to enter lives wherein they find inner purpose and experience sincere passion at what they are doing, we their mothers must first locate and identify our purpose in living and that, which ignites our passion.
We must also accept and believe that we deserve to live a life that yields no less.
